1812年、イギリス軍がマックヘンリー砦
(Fort McHenry) に攻めてきたときのことです。歌詞の作者である フランシス・スコット・キー
(Francis Scott Key) は、イギリス海軍に囚われていた地元政府役人の釈放を要求するために敵軍の船上へと向いました。役人の釈放はかなったものの、戦況が悪化し、そこで一晩拘束されてしまいます。その間にマックヘンリー砦は激しい攻撃を受けますが、あくる朝、彼が目にしたものは、砦の上に翻る星条旗でした。これに感動した彼は思わずこの「星条旗」
(The Star Spangled Banner) という詩を書き上げたのでした。ちなみに歌詞を書く際に思い浮かべていたのは
"Anacreon in Heaven" （天国のアナクレオン：アナクレオンは古代ギリシアの恋愛詩人）というドリンキング・ソング（お酒を飲みながら歌う歌）で、そのメロディーに合わせて歌詞を書いたといいます。それ以後、軍関係の式典などで演奏されていましたが、1931年になって正式に「国歌」として認定されました。
歌詞を原語で味わう
歌詞の日本語訳を読んで「なるほど」というのもいいのですが、言語が異なる限り、その言葉にこもる思いを翻訳では100％再現することは不可能です。たとえば、英語のリズムや韻を踏んでいる表現など、原語でしか味わえない部分もあります。ここはひとつ思い切って、英語で読んでみましょう。
