霧島ツツジ

Kirishima Azalea
で、この赤い花は「霧島（きりしま）ツツジ」。この霧島ツツジっていう名前は九州南部の霧島山にちなんでつけられたらしくって、このツツジもこの長岡天満宮の見どころのひとつなんだって。だいたい4月中旬から5月上旬にかけて咲き、長岡市の「市の花」にも指定されているみたいね。でさ、ここの霧島ツツジは野生に近くて、高さ2.5メートルから3メートルって言うからすごいじゃない。樹齢も100～150歳なんだって。すごいわね、アタシも長生きしたいわ。それでさ、この池の中央が天満宮に入る道になってるんだけど、この両側にびっしりツツジが咲いていてそりゃもう見事なもんよ。花よりだんごっていうけど、やっぱ、花もいいもんよ。

でも、お腹空いたわね。アンタは？そうそう、屋台もいっぱい出てるわよ。それに、ツツジだけじゃなくて、桜もいいわね。これはさ、天満宮から見ると向こう岸の建物のところに植えられている八重桜よ～。ツツジのシーズンに行くと八重桜も見られて、ほんと、一粒で二度おいしいわよ～。
In early summer, the sides of the passageway over the pond are ablaze with vermilion azalea blossoms, as if serving a welcome gauntlet for visitors. Called Kirishima (derived from Mt. Kirishima in Southern Kyushu), the species is the designated flower of Nagaoka City. For its similarity to a wild azalea species, Kirishima grows relatively tall (2.5 to 3 meters high). The shrubs here are between 100 to 150 years old.

Flower-loving visitors can also enjoy viewing cherry blossoms with multiple petal layers seen to the north of the shrine, from the passageways on the pond in late April.

For those who love "Dumplings rather than flowers", there are some food stalls in the yard vending typical Japanese festival snacks.
