牡丹（ぼたん）の寺
The Temple of Peonies
てなことで、歴史の勉強の後はお花見。でもさ、アンタ、おにぎりとかビールとか飲み食いはダメよ。牡丹の季節は４月中旬から５月中旬。今年行けなかったアンタ、来年もあるわよ。でもってさ、ここの牡丹、全部で2000株くらいあるんだって。
Peonies are in full bloom in late April to early May, flamboyantly decorating the entire garden. Around 30 species and 2000 roots of peonies are planted here.

ああ～、きれいねえー。牡丹もこれだけ見るとクラクラするわね。そんなとき、ちょっと目を休めてコレ。釣鐘なんか眺めて見るのもいいわよ。この乙訓地方では、春になれば「筍（たけのこ）」。門を出たとこでも売ってるからお土産に買って帰るのもいいわよ。釣鐘と筍とどういう関係があるのかって？あ、いけない、いけない。釣鐘をよ～く見るとさ、撞木（しゅもく）って言うんだけど、鐘突き棒が竹でできてるのよ。面白いでしょ。
でね、牡丹の畑にさ、番傘（ばんがさ）がいっぱいあるの。これはさ、直射日光や雨とかを避けて花を長持ちさせるっていう目的みたいよ。牡丹ともなると、そこら辺の野生のタンポポみたいに逞（たくま）しくないってことね。
さあ、花見に疲れたらちょっと一服。冷たい甘酒でもどう？この季節だけかもしれないけど、筍の煮付けをつまみに冷たい甘酒、熱いお茶。あ～、風流ねー。
Other notable features of the temple are the belfry with a bamboo-made bell striker (usually made of wood) and oil paper umbrellas placed in the peony fields serving as a shield to protect the flowers from strong sunshine or rain.
For a refreshing break after intensive flowery viewing, a cup of cold Amazake (sweet fermented rice drink) is served for a charge, together with hot tea and a tidbit of bamboo shoots boiled with soy sauce and sugar, at a provisional tea shop. The bamboo shoot is a special product of this region and in the season, it is sold along with other various local food products outside the temple gate as souvenirs.
