Nanakusa Gayu  ななくさがゆ, 七草粥

Seven-herbs Porridge

Meaning “seven-herbs porridge”, Nanakusa Gayu is a dish consumed on January 7, wishing health throughout the year. So, what are those seven herbs to be included? They are Seri (Japanese parsley), Nazuna (shepherd’s purse), Gogyō (a species of daisy plant), Hakobera (Stellaria), Hotokenoza (Lapsana), Suzuna (turnip), and Suzushiro (radish). But you don’t have to explore the fields to find them; a seven-herbs set is available at the supermarket. The taste? Well, you can’t expect much since its purpose is to enhance your health, and it tastes like another salt-based porridge. An ancient legend says a filial son prepared this porridge for his ailing (already) centenarian parents to prolong their lifespans.
