イソップ童話の The Ass in a Lion's Skin がルーツで、その下はその教訓を文章で表現したもの。最後の表現も古代ギリシアの逸話を取り入れたイソップ童話の題名 The Bird in Borrowed Feathers が由来で、バリエーションとして adorn oneself with borrowed plumes とも言います。
